The Benazir Income Support Programme is a federal poverty reduction program in Pakistan. It was launched in July 2008 and is the largest social safety net program in the country, disbursing nearly Rs. 90 billion to 5.4 million beneficiaries in 2016.
The BIPSP has been credited with tackling poverty and ensuring that no one goes hungry in Pakistan.
However, the BIPSP has seen many problems and still has far to go before reaching its full potential.
In the aftermath of the recent economic crisis, the government of Pakistan has launched the Benazir Income Support Program, a unique cash-for-work programme for the poor and unemployed.
This program targets women aged 18 and married and aims to supplement their incomes.
The Benazir Income Support Program has a nationwide presence.
Its headquarters are in Islamabad, and it also has six regional offices in the provinces. There are 33 divisional offices and 385 Tehsil offices throughout the country.
The government of Pakistan introduced the Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) in 2007 and it has disbursed more than US$2.9 billion to beneficiaries.
This is made possible by a highly transparent payment system involving partner banks. For example, BISP grants were provided to families through telephone-to-phone banking.
The beneficiaries were issued with a cell phone and SIM at the NADRA counter.
They were required to send SMSs to a designated mobile number in order to receive their cash grants.
The Benazir Income Support Program has proved to be a huge success. Since its implementation in 2008, the Government of Pakistan has disbursed,
more than $1 billion in cash grants to over 3.5 million women in Pakistan. The goal is to include 5.5 million women in the program by 2016.
The BISAP was initially funded through Pakistan Post branches. But now, the payments have been made through the internet and other payment technologies.
